140 hours in the workplace gives Teesside teen a bright future

A dedicated Career Ready student is heading for career success thanks to a life-changing internship provided by local employer Mobile Mini, a leading hirer of portable site accommodation and secure storage containers. After successfully completing a six-week internship in 2016 set up by national charity Career Ready, Harry has returned to the marketing department of Mobile Mini for an additional 10 weeks this summer, before heading to university.

One of nearly 1,000 Career Ready students across the UK benefiting from internships each year, Harry stood out from the crowd having been invited back for a second internship, taking on more responsibilities, on a higher wage and for an extended period of time.

Harry, who was also the winner of the AstraZeneca STEM Student of the Year Award for Technology in 2017, is applauded by Career Ready, which is currently running a high-profile 140 hours campaign – backed by major businesses – encouraging employers across the UK to provide paid internships to students lasting a minimum of 140 hours (four weeks). Career Ready has found that 140 hours is the right amount of time for a young person to make an impression in the workplace, and for employers to make an impression on a young person. This timescale allows for an intern to work as part of a team, complete a project and build confidence in the workplace.

As well as welcoming hard-working Harry back to the team, Mobile Mini, a leading hirer of portable site accommodation and secure storage containers, has also opened its doors to a new intern, Tim Sigsworth, who will be developing his skills and confidence within the finance department of Mobile Mini this summer.

Reflecting on his latest work placement, Harry said: “I’d encourage anyone to do an internship as part of the Career Ready programme. I was really pleased that Mobile Mini invited me back again this summer. I have worked on real marketing projects from managing social media accounts to writing blogs, which has given me further insight into life in a marketing department. I’m heading off to university in September, which I am really looking forward to, and it helps that I now have a strong idea of what I want to do in the future thanks to my experience gained through Career Ready and Mobile Mini.”

Louise Arnold, HR Director at Mobile Mini said: “We are delighted to have Harry back working for us this year, and indeed to take on another intern, Tim. Internships really enhance the way we do things. It’s great to have bright, enthusiastic team members join us. I’d encourage other employers to do the same: it has definitely changed our business for the better.”
