How does Mobile Mini choose the right people?

As the leading provider of secure storage containers and portable accommodation, Mobile Mini UK has maintained our long-standing reputation for high-quality industry performance. One of the fundamental ways we have achieved this is by providing bespoke solutions to individual customers and never taking a one-size-fits-all approach. In the same way that we understand clients have different needs, we understand this also applies to the people who join the Mobile Mini family.

Mobile Mini is a highly regarded employer in the construction industry for several reasons.

The recruitment process for Mobile Mini is designed to get the best from our applicants so that they can show their skills and attributes during interviews. This means each role has a slightly different selection process that is tailored to the role to ensure that we find the best candidate.  For example, a Yard Operative may have a skills-based assessment as part of their interview whereas a management role may include a presentation on a certain topic. Every candidate who makes it to the interview can expect to meet the team as part of the process and get an introduction to the culture they may soon be a part of.

Most of our roles include a second-stage personality profile test, which can sound off-putting but is nothing to worry about. This is designed to give an honest overview of what matters to you, identifying any needs you may have and ensuring we can provide an environment where you will be supported and developed. We always aim to give feedback to candidates who are unsuccessful, and the door is never closed should you be interested in applying again for future roles and opportunities.

The People & Development team will support you through every step of the onboarding process to ensure that everything that needs to be completed is finalised well in advance of your first day. The team are also here to support you through your first few weeks with the business whilst you settle in!


What happens after you join the company?

Josh Aston, Learning & Development Coordinator, shares what to expect when the onboarding process begins…

It is important to know that you are not thrown into the deep end and forgotten about when you join Mobile Mini. We are proud of our Golden Rules, most notably, people are our most valuable asset. It can be scary stepping into the unknown and joining a new business, but we work hard to reassure new recruits and get them involved with the wider business as soon as possible.

We are an inclusive and diverse company with people from all walks of life, who have different interests, skills and personalities. New recruits get to spend time with every department, out in the field seeing our storage container solutions in action as well as at our offices with our sales and operational employees.

During your first few weeks, you will receive a well-rounded induction with a 360 view of Mobile Mini to help you fully understand how your role fits into the wider business.  This includes spending time out in the field seeing our operations team and HGV fleet in action, as well as shadowing the people you will be working closest to within our office and sales teams.

We have many specialists within the business who provide dedicated support and training in areas from working at height to lifting processes and operating cranes. You will be supervised and kept safe at all times during and after induction as safety is always our number one priority.

Our people benefit from company initiatives as soon as they join us. Our sales induction, for example, has been developed to help get rid of new-job nerves and put our salespeople in the best position to start their roles. Spread over your first 2-3 weeks, this project is aimed at covering all the areas of Mobile Mini that our sales team will encounter. They then remain in regular contact with their dedicated trainer moving forwards via Microsoft Teams and meeting in branches.

We pride ourselves on our employee development programmes and our Driver Development Programme is an excellent example of how we upskill our workforce. This programme is a 12-month course that we offer to all our employees to become fully-fledged HGV drivers.

Our wellbeing commitment has seen 7% of our total number of employees become qualified MHFA this year and can now offer support to their colleagues, either by phone, face-to-face or using a dedicated inbox for support.

Our health and wellbeing commitment continues to evolve to ensure that we offer the best support to our people.  We are very proud that we have 7% of our total number of employees trained in Mental Health First Aid and can now offer support to their colleagues, either by phone, face-to-face or using a dedicated inbox for support.

Further initiatives have included introducing wellbeing as a number one discussion point on all employee-related forms including 1-1s, appraisal and return to work forms. We have also developed an Employee Support resource pack that has lots of useful information and contact details included. We are also proud of the wellbeing Action Plan that has been introduced to support our employees.


What long-term career progression is there at Mobile Mini?

Kieran Williams, Sales Training And Development Manager, explains the ongoing support employees can expect post-induction and beyond…

Training and development are ongoing at Mobile Mini but begin from day one. There’s no need to panic, we keep it simple and only focus on the key fundamentals, but you can expect fresh opportunities to enhance your career throughout the time you spend with us. We try to offer the most welcoming environment imaginable and in the early days, will cover things like what success and failure look like and mean to us, as well as introducing you to our buddy system. This helps set the tone for our supportive environment and ensures you always have regular access to a support network.

There is currently an estimated 21.4% industry-wide construction employee turnover rate, making it one of the highest-rated sectors. Our turnover rate bucks the trend, currently at 19%. Overall, this has fallen 8% since 2019. This is a testament to the support of our People & Development team and the opportunities the business continues to provide. Over the past year, 98% of people have stayed with the business after completing their induction.

Over 82% of our current employees have worked for Mobile Mini for 2 years or longer. More and more people stay with us every year and we look forward to increasing these numbers even further as time progresses. We are extremely proud to promote from within and year on year significant numbers of our people further their careers through internal promotion within our business. We are proud to say that last year, 36 out of 74 available positions were filled by internal promotions (48.6%)!
