Construction Site Theft Report

Thefts from construction sites cost the industry hundreds of millions of pounds every year. To get a closer look at the nature and extent of this criminal activity, Mobile Mini submitted Freedom of Information requests to regional police forces around the country, shedding light on where thieves are operating, and what site managers can do to stay secure and protect their valuable equipment.

Data was compiled from the responses of 27 police forces, who were asked to provide details of the number of incidents, items and value of goods stolen and methods of entry between September 2012 and September 2013. This data was then analysed to generate a national picture of construction site thefts in the UK.

Headline figures from the data include:

  • An estimated 6,000 instances of theft from construction sites in the UK between September 2012 and September 2013
  • 35% of incidents saw force used to gain access to sites
  • 21% of incidents occurred where sites were simply left unsecured
  • Plant equipment was commonly targeted, along with metals and tools Click the links below to access the individual region datasets.
